New ADA Guidelines Address Dry Mouth and Root Decay Risks for Adults Over 65

Posted

The American Dental Association released updated clinical guidelines yesterday specifically addressing the unique oral health challenges facing our senior population. Dry mouth, medication side effects, and increased root decay risk top the list of concerns.

With more Americans keeping their natural teeth longer than ever before, these guidelines emphasize preventive strategies including prescription-strength fluoride, saliva-stimulating products, and more frequent professional care.

Key recommendations include: Using high-fluoride toothpaste daily, staying well hydrated, avoiding acidic drinks between meals, and scheduling dental visits every 3-4 months for many seniors.

Implant-supported restorations are also highlighted as excellent options for improving function and quality of life for older adults.

It's never too late to invest in your oral health and overall wellbeing.
